There is a statutory obligation on users of all motor vehicles in Ghana to provide security against their liability for death of or bodily injury caused to third parties.
The relevant law is the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act, 1958.

Highlights of the scope of cover
Vehicle loss or damage
For loss or damage to vehicles caused by or arising out of:
- Accidental Collision, Overturning, etc.
- Fire, External Explosion, Self-Ignition or Lightning
- Theft, Burglary, House-Breaking
- Malicious Acts
- Flood, Storm, Earthquake, Riot, Strike and Civil Commotion
- Whilst in Transit
Liability to third parties
Legal liabilities arising from an Accident caused by your vehicle:
- Death or bodily injury to any person-unlimited cover
- Damage to property belonging to other people– up to an agreed amount.
THIRD PARTY ONLY
The policy indemnifies the insured and any permitted driver for all sums legally liable to pay in respect of death, bodily injury or property damage to third parties following a motor accident.
- Damage to own vehicles is excluded if it is the owner's fault.
- Where there is no monetary limit for the cover granted in respect of death or bodily injury, the Insurer's liability for property damage is currently GH¢1,000.
- There is a first aid/emergency treatment benefit of GH¢50 per accident victim.
THIRD PARTY FIRE & THEFT
Cover is the same as for Third Party only, except for the addition of damage to the vehicle by fire and/or theft. |
